Breathe

Breathe

Let the cold air rise into your lungs

Hold it in for a moment

Slowly release it out from your mouth

Let it form a tiny cloud in front of you

Watch

As the cloud disappears into the day

The ground is blinding

Striking white

Shocking you out of your shell

Listen

To the satisfying crunch of snow

As your feet mark the earth

Making a fleeting sign

That you were here

Stand

Through the wind

That whips through the sky

Wanting to carry you

Away from the chaos of the ground

Run

Past the scratching branches

They try to catch you

But you are too quick

Splash

In the creek

Water rushes past your bare legs

Stinging your precious skin

You do not mind

Jump

Over the old wooden fence

The neighbors put up a in a different time

Times where you were not around

To be with me

Open

A barn red front door

The smell of me swirls around you

Greeting an old friend

Pet

My goofy puppy

As he bounds down the steps

Recognizing the sound of you

Wave

To my mother

Setting the table for dinner

She is surprised to see you

After so long

She smiles

And sets an extra place

Just in case

Chat

With my father

As he watches the game

Dad is stiff at first

Until he sees

I was not the only victim of us

He hoped you would come back

Play

With my younger brother

He never understood

Why you left

How you could go so easily

I never did either

Knock

On my bedroom door

Your fist is hesitant at first

Till your eyes roll over the picture

Of a girl and a boy

So obviously in love

And you think

Maybe there is a chance for us

Step

Cautiously into my room

Waiting for the ice to break

For the screaming to begin

Sit

On the edge of my bed

Both of us disjointed

Hard to believe

You once fit

So naturally beside me

Talk

With me

You try to salvage the remains

Piecing together a doomed thing

Breathe

In air thick enough

It sticks to your insides

As I tell you

That I can’t do it

I can’t be with you again

Let the air leave your body

Like you left me

In wrecked breathes

Watch

A girl you once knew

Form soundless words

On her rose colored lips

Lips you used to kiss

Tell you goodbye

Listen

To a barking dog

The clatter of a plate being put away

An announcer cut off mid sentence

Blocks tumbling down

Slam of a door

Stand

Outside my window

Try to see my side

Through warm tears

And a cold evening

Run

Alongside the fence

Locking you out

Pushing you farther

And farther

Away from me

Splash

Into the frigid waters

Of the creek

Water biting your legs

Like angry piranhas

Wanting you dead

Jump

Over a fallen

Rotted tree

This is just like the first time

Open

Yourself onto a blank page

Throwing it all into these words

That just don’t seem to fit anymore

Like us
